Trivial Question -- Completely Unimportant

May 16, 2012 2 Replies

If one makes a mistake, either in arithmetic or copying from source documents, in filling out 1040 and schedules A,B, and D, but the mistake does not change the bottom line of payment or refund due, will the IRS let you know?

or, if it does change the bottom line a tiny bit, is there a threshold below they won't bother notifying you or seeking a correction?

If the tax amount does not change, they won't contact you.
