US citizens residing in a foreign country.

I have asked this question before. My solution was to tack a note to my return. But this time I am e-filing.

I am helping my son do his taxes. He lives in a foreign country with questionable mail service. I am trying to e-file his tax. But there is no way to indicate a different mailing address (our home address in the US) from his residential address in this country. So now if the IRS were to send him a letter it has to go to his residing country. Previously I paper file and attach a note indicating a different mailing address. How can I do this thru e-file?

There's only room for one address as the mailing address. There is room for a "Care Of Name". You can use his name as the taxpayer and your name and address as a care of address.

The OP said he was e-filing. Just about every piece of software I have seen, has a line entry right above the address where a care of name can be entered. The actual 1040 name & address area as room for five lines of print. When the 1040 prints: First line has the taxpayer name. Second line is reserved for spouse's name. Third line has the care of name. Fourth & fifth lines are the address.

I should have added... If you are not using software, you can just print the names on the first 3 lines (there are no actual lines... but you know what I mean).

I am using TaxAct and I don't see a line specific for "care of". But if you enter a care of address for the 4th and 5th line, where do you actually enter the foreign address?

All s/w is different. Most of the s/w I have seen will use the foreign address that you enter as the mailing address. It will over ide any other address you enter.
