what type of income is interview income

Suppose you get paid to do an interview. Is this Other Income or self- employment income?

I think if it's an interview that's part of your Schedule C business (like if you're a writer and are paid to do an interview), then it is Schedule C income, subject to federal, state, local, FICA tax.

If it's a one-off interview (like an interview by a tabloid), then it is Other Income, subject to all of the above taxes except FICA.

If this is associated with your trade or business then report on Schedule C.

If just a one-time only income source it is reported on Form 1040 line 21.

Agree, if it was just a hobby -- no profit motive.

I wonder, if the interview was in connection with your employment -- and assuming your employer let you keep the money -- then what?

removeps-groups mentions an interview by a tabloid -- if you are a celebrity/reality-TV type, then I would say it *is* in connection with your trade or business.

My guess is Schedule C income so that you get the "opportunity" to pay social security and medicare tax.

Depends on facts and circumstances.
