They are deductible, but not on necessarily on schedule A. If you held the stock short for

Charitable contributions - carried forward 5 years Capital loss carryover - forever NOL - carried forward 20 years (can also carryback 2 to 5 years, depending on the law in place at the time, then excess is carried forward)
