Withholding Question

A young relative just received his W-2 after much hassle with his employer, a retail chain with stores in many states. There was only $112 withheld for the year. He gets only a paycheck, not a paystub showing all the details of deductions. I've advised him to file on time with the payment plan form.

What can he do to get pay stub information and is there any way to get the IRS involved?

You don't need the paystub information to get your taxes right. Do all the numbers on the W-2 look correct? Box 1, 3, 5 are probably the same value, box 4 is probably 6.2% of box 3, box 6 is probably 1.45% of box 5. If the person participated in a retirement plan then box 12 will list it.

I don't know what state you're in, and I'm not sure it matters. Most states have rules that require that a pay stub be issued. If he has direct deposit he should still get a stub, though it may be in electronic format. So he should have access to a stub of some kind, somehow.

Also, telling us he only had $112 withheld doesn't really mean anything. For all we know his total wages were only $300 - in which case his withholding should be more than sufficient.

He should ask the payroll department what his withholding status is - single and 0 exemptions, married and 12, something like that. It could be that he gave them incorrect information on his W-4 such that he was severely underwithheld. This happens more often that most people realize.

Not a tax issue. Check with your state's labor dept.

I'm the OP and I definitely did not explain well the situation. He feels sure his income tax withholding was much more than $112. He says his withholding status is single & 1. I'm wondering now if he is telling the truth and was not actually employed full time the entire year. His employer is a well known company, so it's hard to believe there are no pay stubs & his W-2 didn't arrive until last week. Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, without proof, he will have to go with the figures on the W-2. That is the documented information and which you have to use to prepare the tax return.

It may be that he had other deductions from his pay that he considered to be "Tax" but which were not and now are not on his W-2. If he wishes to proceed any further with his complaint, he will need to provide proof.
