Wrote wrong date on January Estimated Tax Payment

-------------------------------------

Hi--yes, I'm an idiot.

I was writing my checks for my 2009 January estimated tax payments to the IRS and to my state a day or two ago, mailed them--and then realized that I dated the checks 2009, rather than 2010.

Other than beating my head against the wall for my stupid mistake (yep, I double checked everything else)--what should I do about sending stale dated checks?

My father suggested I call the state and the IRS. I was considering just watching my bank account online, and see if the checks went through, and then call the agencies if the checks didn't clear within a week to ten days.

Please give me some advice! I'm so anal about being early and on time by nature, I can't believe I did this!

I would ignore this for now. If the state or the IRS or the bank takes issue with the date, they will let you know quickly enough.

Chances are pretty good that no one will actually care.

That probably doesn't happen to more than 50% of the checks written in the first week of a new year.

Realize that you have a lot of company. If you're really worried, ask your bank what they'll do (and they'll tell you the checks will go through just fine if the money is in your account, they don't look at the date).
