I think this expression relates to shares in companies, not to Unit Trusts or OEICS. Companies often issue different classes of shares, e.g. they may issue some 'ordinary' shares and some 'A' shares and some 'cumulative preference' shares. All of these will be issues of shares of a different 'class'.
