Richard, how would you feel about someone who was not prepared to provide the detailed info into their financial position, but instead suggested an extremely quick move to 'exchange of contracts' (possibly "Scottish-style") - would that alleviate any fears?
I must say, I know someone who bought a half-a-million pound house a few years ago and they were not asked for their income. Anyway, they are the kind of person that wouldn't have wanted to provide it anyway!

The OP asked a question and, as an estate agent, I have answered it honestly. Furthermore, it is not me he will be approaching for a property, so discussing the merits/morals/ethics of my answers will not help him. If neither of you like my replies, that is not something I can help.
BTW - if he does approach me for a property, not disclosing income, if asked, will have the effect suggested.
I have also suggested that he can do what he likes and take his chances.
