To be fair most of my co-redundees managed to get work in Glasgow and I was being choosy in looking for work that would involve exploiting my AI/machine learning/research skills.
Serious decentralisation of power in the UK might go some way towards addressing the problem.

I've been in favour of that for a lot of years.
Not the piddly few thousand admin jobs moved to Northumberland like Major did and Blair/Brown followed but wholesale shifting of the entire ministry including minister. There is absolutely no need for centralised government in a country this size with modern communications. Even if a minister were needed for a cabinet meeting face to face they could all be together in under a couple of hours.
I'd really like to see the Home Office in Silloth and the MOD in Hull

Look at my situation - I am unemployed and only get £15 help towards my mortgage leaving me with a £150 shortfall that i must find even though i have no money. I also have to pay Service charges and Life Assurance and bills.
The local council has moved none working single mothers into our private flats - these get their full rents paid which in turn pays the landlords mortgage each month in full. Some of these rich landlords own 3 flats in the block etc.
The Housing Benefit culture has created this mess.
