Government considering phasing out pensions tax free lump sum

Sure but knowing how governments complicate things there may be different rules or exemptions for different products. eg benefits like the basic pension means tested, personal pensions not. I think using a number of different savings vehicles to save for retirement gives you a better chance.

wow!

this is three to four times the amount of bonus added to my funds over the same period (2.5-3% pa).

I've just lost all sympathy with EL complainers. (Not that I had any before because I had heard that they had guarenteed bonuses added that were very high, but the last time I asked for some figure I was denied an answer, no wonder, those figures are embarrassing)

Ditto. I've been contracted out since the late 80s - early 90s.

Like many, I was unsure of how my funds performed year by year, due to the complexity of the with profits model, so I performed an analysis from inception to transfer out using the annual fund value figure, removing any subscriptions -

The figures are close enough to the published bonus rates (as in my post). The differences are probably down to special offer rates. So as far as I'm concerned, I trust the published figures.

Not quite sure what you are saying here.

It looks like over period EL gave bonuses totalling

134% during a period when the SE Index rose 90%.

Given that these are annual bonuses that cannot be taken away and which would not be sustainable if the market went down (or even if it just stayed flat), ISTM that such bonuses paid by a WP fund were completely unjustified and anybody who's now in a position of having a chunk of them taken away deserves compensation from the tax-payer of absolutely nothing.

Such people might have a complaint against the managers of the fund for miss-leading them but they have no complaint that I should be paying for.

It does depend on when you joined Equitable Life. If you joined in the late 1990s then you got shafted, and then got shafted some more.
