In the olde pre-IR35 days, I understand that a number of small computer consultancy firms used to offer their employees an NVQ in 'Piloting Transport Aircraft'.
AIUI, a PPL was the first step towards obtaining said NVQ, and NVQ training wasn't a taxable benefit... ;->

It's never wrong, the issue is whether it generates a BIK tax charge. The above is unlikely to.
But ISTM that a payiing for a three year degree course might.

Peter, provided you are careful and don't drop heavy hints in places where Tax Inspectors like Simon lurk, the chances of anyone being able to track you down to Newbourn - a little village in the South of Suffolk, sort of midway between Ipswich, Woodbridge and Felixstowe - are not high.

The trouble is, after the intro of ITEPA, this aspect has been rewritten in the employees favour and you can pretty well drive a coach and horses through the legislation. I don't suppose this was the intent but it is certainly the effect.
I suspect you will all see a different attitude taken by HMRC, especially after they lose the argument a few times.
I am losing track of the above, was it Troy who pointed out the risk of Random selection. There are many reasons a case can be selected but the random ones are compulsory and have to be taken up. So Troy was quite right, if your number comes up, they will be taking a look.

I know Healthcare is subject to a Postcode lottery but I didn't think tax was. There is one though, I am sure that you are familiar with the term "Trivial Benefit". Try asking I Hant and Wight the level of a trivial benefit, then phone Manchester or North East and compare notes.
