You could fit snow ploughs on their wheelchairs so they could clear the footpaths in winter

"The inactivity rate for the three months to April 2010 was 21.5 per cent, up 0.1 on the quarter. The number of inactive people of working age increased by 29,000 over the quarter to reach a record high of

8.19 million."

and

"The number of vacancies for the three months to May 2010 was 492,000, up 7,000 over the quarter. All industrial sectors showed small movements in vacancies over the quarter."

Or possibly you *can* read but don't understand the words and figures.

AlanG gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

With an attitude that defeatist, it's no wonder you're not part of the

92.1% working.

I can indeed read, and the statistics show why its even more important to be prepared to make some sacrifices to move to somewhere that you can find a job.

You obviously didn't understand that for every job available there are over 5 people wanting it. Would you like to explain to the other 4+ what they could do?

The unemployed used to be able to obtain a warrant from the jobcentre to attend interviews, I don't whether this is still possible.

An example: Even during the 'boom' years our local supermarkets had no trouble in recruiting shelf stackers on minimum wage. And this is in a prosperous area. I doubt anyone from outside the area would have any chance of getting such a job now. Someone from up north is also unlikely to be able to relocate here since the cost of living is much higher.

Yes, and the idea of people from other countries coming here to do such jobs is even more ridiculous. The idea that anyone would travel half way across Europe to take a low paid job in the UK is just plain silly, for the same reasons. Isn't it.
