Self-emlpoyment question

I was self-employed for 10 years then was made bankrupt and then worked for a company for 2 years and am now self-employed again. Do I need tell the IR that I am S/E again formally, or will they just be happy when I send in my next Self Assesment? They have continued to send SA's even during my 2 years of work so I get the feeling they just are treating me as 'self-employed with job as well'.

Also, in the two years prior to my bankrupcy I missed filing 2 SA's and my advisor told me there was no need to bother doing them so I haven't. However, the IR continues to send me reminders for the two £100 penalties for late filing, should I pay up or argue that I didn't need to file, so don't need to pay penalty?

Cheers

Are you paying the monthly self-employed NI (=2pw) ?

And you should notified the IR if self-employment recommenced, as opposed to suspended. Otherwise a 100 penalty.

Getting a request to send in a tax return isn't any acknowledgement of treating you as self-employed. You need to inform the Inland Revenue.

Sure, argue that you don't need to file but try to give a proper reason and not just say that someone - even an "advisor" - told you so.
