tired of silent calls

This is the probably the last day for you to contact OFCOM with your views on silent calls.

Ofcom wants to hear what citizens think about its new policy against Silent Calls - BEFORE 9 JANUARY 2006.

I have prepared a guide for the benefit of those who may be looking to contribute to the Ofcom consultation on the new Silent Calls Policy that was introduced on 31 October 2005.

I hope this will be found to be useful by those who are deeply interested in this matter or who are simply following the story.

It is available in MS-Word, HTML and PDF formats.

I encourage anyone who feels strongly about my campaign, negatively or positively to contact me.

I find it hard to beleive that there are groups who argue that making silent calls is acceptable and should not be prevented by Ofcom. Especialy when most silent calls have no caller ID.

The companies that are responsible for making these calls are lobbying to prevent legislation being brought in.

They are not, they are argueing that it is expedient and as such they should continue to inconvenience people for an overall economic benefit. Kind of how we got call-centres in the first place.

They are automated calls. The scum that use this method know that 99% (or more) calls will fail so they use an automated dialler and only pass the call through to a limited number of 'representatives' when someone answers - if no representative is available the call is silent. They usually withhold their number or use a premium rate return number.

I get plagued by these calls, despite having signed up with the The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) [1] a year ago. As a result of these calls I now let the answer-phone pick up all my calls [2]

[1] The TPS is somewhat of joke as it cannot (will not) deal with any silent call complaints and it has no influence on advertising cold calls from abroad which are becoming common [2] The problems with this is that some foreign companies, such as the Disney Corporation, fill up the answer machine with automated advertising.

Why won't they deal? Is it because you can't show that they're advertising calls?

I have a tough time reassuring my 71 y/o lady friend that these are not malicious calls. They are certainly nuisance calls.

She had that, too, but not to the same degree.
