Who offers the best deal? I don't want to be paying commission for paying $ cheques into an account - some of them are quite small so the fee almost makes it not worth while.

With a normal sterling current account, Abbey National charge 10 for each foreign currency cheque and Nationwide charge nothing. The conversion rates are competitive. It takes a month or two for the cheques to clear, but if charges are your main concern ask what your own bank would charge.
