Money, Quicken, or online?

Newbie question here. My wife and I have small scattered investments in various mutuals, stocks, bonds. Some are direct with firms (ie, Vanguard) and some through brokerages (ie, Schwab, Etrade). I thought that I could use an online site (Yahoo, Motley) to input data and have it track so I wouldn't have to keep inputting into excel. That didn't work so well and I'm willing to buy Money or Quicken but are they the right tool. I appreciate your response, I think . . .

I use Money for mutuals and stocks (I don't own any bonds, so I can't comment on how it handles them) and I'm very happy with the program. What limitations did you find with the online services that you're trying to avoid?

You can input all your outside investments in Vanguard. I have investments in Fidelity; T Rowe Price;Scottrade and individual stocks that I track in my Vanguard account. It is very convenient and free!!!!

I'm pretty sure its operator error and not the online service per se

I tried that and it sucks. I have to update the damn thing every time I make a transaction or get paid divdends or anything happens. I'd check with your banks online banking section and see if they have something like that. For e.g. Citibank has Myaccounts Aggregation, Wachovia has One Stop, Chase has Chase Online Plus (I think thats the name). Those automatically go fetch your information from your accounts so you don't have to do it manually.

Vanguard's Consolidated View(R) allows you to enter data manually, as you described, or aggregate it automatically, as the former poster described.

Vanguard uses CashEdge technology

while Citibank, Wachovia, and Chase (as well as most of the financial world, it seems) use Yodlee:

This seems to exist only in the FAQ. I can't find it in my account views at all.

Maybe it is provided only for some customers, e.g. Portfolio Watch is provided for Voyager customers, according to the Voyager page; but that page doesn't say anything about Consolidated View.

Try looking at your "My Portfolios" tab, "Overview" page.

Under "accounts and activity" (first group on the left), under "Total Vanguard Assets" should be a link labeled "Add Outside Investments."

This link should take you to a page that gives two choices: Line Online Accounts (automatic aggregation) Direct Entry (manual entry)

I only have direct entry. There is no Link Online Accounts. So yeah, it is not for everyone.

I use Yahoo finance quite a bit. They allow you to set up a list of stocks or funds and view selected parameters each day. Unfortunately they do not provide the flexibility to construct a week by week summary of your holdings. This can be accomplished in a two step process. Copy the table from Yahoo and paste it into an Excel workbook. Then copy the column you want and past it into an ongoing Excel financial file. After the initial setup, the data collection process is very quick.
