p/e ratio for s&p 500

i was told this was on the s&p site but all i can find is a yearly p/e ratio.

anyone know where this can be found nowadays? and why is this fundamental number so hard to find? maybe i can calculate it.

The Wall Street Journal has index p/e ratios and dividend yields as part of their market data.

Why not look at SPY? It shows a P/E of 13.47 as of 9/30/08. If that's not accurate enough, you can do the math from the 9/30 closing price to get a precise number.

Reuters has the S&P 500 p/e ratio at 17.93.

The earnings are reported at different times making the ratio a moving target. Another factor that is important is the number of shares outstanding along with the possibility that dilution can occur in cases of options or convertible bonds.
