Large scale customer data updates

I'm doing some reports for an accounting firm and have found that they have little consistency on how they enter the Item ID's, etc. The ID's contain sizes of the items and they want a cross-tab report listing the stock of each size. For example: Item ID ------- DB1001-5.5 // 5.5 is size DB1009-5-23 // 5 is size DB-1101-50-y11 // 50 is incorrect size DB 140-5.5-r2-s // 5.5 is size DB-2005-W // 'W' is size



So my question is what is the best way for them to make group updates to the customer data? I didn't find any tools in Peach Tree 2005 for this. I want to avoid having to do it by hand because of the time it would take.



Any help appreciated.

I've had good luck exporting to a CSV file, using Excel formulas to generate IDs, etc., then importing back into Peachtree.

When you export the Item ID's and change them, then import them back to Peachtree, they will be entered as new item ID's. This will duplicate your entire inventory, and you will not be able to delete the old Item ID"s since they have activity against them.

You can only change the ID's one at a time via "Change Item ID" icon. It might be easier to create a new company, and import a clean inventory file . You can use the old company to view prior transaction history.

it's been a very long tim since I've done anything with exporting/importing via csv files, so I can't comment on whether or not it duplicates items. It is important to note that the Item ID isn't the primary key on the items table within Peachtree (which is why we can change Item IDs and keep all of the history). You can use PAWCOM to do massive updates, etc. to your lists - including revamping Item IDs. Since you're not exporting / importing this way, you don't have to worry about duplicate items.

Oops! Good point, Eileen. I forgot that I did it when converting to a new Peachtree company, so I was changing a "clean" company file with no transactions.
