Best way to setup item

Hi,

I am setting up a new store for my brother. He will be selling Marlboro in Carton and in single pack:

Should i set the item as : FOR EXAMPLE Item Type: Standard item: MARLBORO KING SIZE SOFT PACK CAR BARCODE:028200135803 COST:26.99 PRICE:35.99

THEN AGAIN Item Type: Standard item: MARLBORO KING SIZE SOFT PACK SINGLES BARCODE:02835824 COST:2.69 PRICE:3.59 PARENT ITEM:028200135803(MARLBORO KING SIZE SOFT PACK CAR)

IS THIS THE BEST WAY? we will be receiving inventory as cartons..so how will the cost /price of the item be adjusted in the single packs.

Any help will be highly appreciated!

If I recall correctly, the cost of the child item will update as soon as a parent with a higher cost is broken, but the price won't. you'll need to monitor your carton costs so that you can adjust the price of the child item as needed.

Setting up the parent and child is correct as you show.

If you want the price adjusted automatically, there were some database triggers posted here a while back that would automatically update the price by a % of the cost whenever it was increased. I never used them since I don't have a single % that I mark up my products by so it wouldn't work for me, but they might work for you. Keep in mind, from what I understand, triggers can cause problems with your database if you're not careful, but I do use a couple that have saved me a lot of time, and haven't done anything bad to my database(as far as I can tell).
