Finding registration number

I installed Quickbooks 2005 on my new computer and restored my backup file, but now when I start the program I'm asked for a validation or registration number. I looked in the QB 2005 that I have on my old computer and couldn't find it. The "Help" info says that the number doesn't appear anywhere because "once you've registered it with Intuit you won't need it anymore". Does anyone know what I can do so I can use my new computer?

Open QB on your old computer and hold down the Ctrl key and 1.

Then register the program again with Intuit.

I've only installed QuickBooks 2005 once, but they have changed the registration procedure, have they not? With prior versions all the information could be gathered with a CTRL-1 (for reinstall purposes), I'm not sure you can get the info easily any longer. I think the license allows for two installations, and the activation procedure allows that. After that, I think you have no recourse but to contact Intuit.

Look for the e-mail message that you got from Intuit when you registered it on your old computer for your registration number.

They must have changed it with 2005. I have Pro 2004 and you can see the registration number. I verified that it matched the e-mail message that they sent me when I registered the product.

Gary, the process has changed in QB2005. Programs are no longer 'registered' they are 'activated'. Once you've installed the program on your new pc, you should be able to go to the help menu and find a command for manage my license and sync. The program will ask for some verification info such as phone number and zip code. If they match what is in the system your program will validate and you will be finished. If they don't, you will need to call QB support to get the validation completed manually.

Thanks, I knew the process had changed, but I don't have it installed here to verify procedure. Hopefully your info will help the OP.

Actually I believe you are partially correct. If you re-install QB 2005 on a new machine and attempt to activate the program over the internet a message pops up and tells you that the software has been previously activated and asks you questions. The questions to complete the re-activation may be as simple as the phone number and zip code used for the inital activation. If the user is unable to supply this information then a phone call to Intuit may be your only recourse.

Hopefully others will contiue this post with additional information.
