How to have "amts inc tax" checked by default?

Is it possible to set things up in QB 2004 so that whenever I enter an invoice or bill the box is automatically ticked to include tax?

If the supplier is one you have paid before and you have the preference selected to automatically complete the bill information, you will get the same selection as before. But otherwise the box will not be checked and you cannot change the default.

The problem of not being able to set default choices runs throughout QB and is an issue that has been raised by various users. It has also been pointed out to Intuit repeatedly over a number of years but they are apparently not interested in making QB more user-friendly in this respect.

So join the club of the millions of us who have to select the options we want thousands of times per year because Intuit can't be bothered to save us this inconvenience by making it possible to set default choices. No matter that the Amts Inc Tax should be checked 95% of the time. It's like the option to choose whether time recorded is billable or non-billable, which in my version - Pro 2003 UK - defaults to non-billable (although I think that this may have been changed to billable in later versions).

Hopefully, the imminent advent of Microsoft Small Business Accounting package will provide the competition needed to spur Intuit on to listen to users' constructive suggestions for making QB more user-friendly.

In Canada:

You can set a default tax code for Items and for Expense Accounts, which pretty much takes care of your issue when entering Bills. Additionally, if you set the preference "Automatically recall last transaction for this name" you will get the same tax code as used in the previous transaction for each vendor, as Ken described.

The default tax code for Items also applies to Customer Invoices. Additionally, you can set a default tax code for new Customers and a default tax code for each Customer; Customer tax codes take precedence over Item tax codes. The default tax codes that are provided always assume tax will be added, not that the tax is included, but these can be redefined or you can create new "tax-included" codes as required.

Apparently these features differ in other countries. Sorry, I can't answer for NZ or UK versions.
