We had issues with the upgrade to 2007 r8 and had to roll back to 2006. We did find the problem with the help of some quickbook tech support articles which we though should have been in the setup instructions. Now, we ask are the benefits of 2007 worth the trouble of attempting another upgrade.

Well for one thing version 2007 is the only version that is certified to run on Vista. Each new version improves upon what came before it. Go to Intuit's web site to see a comparison of the two versions.
I have seen performance go down with each upgrading starting at 2000. I can say they add a lot of overhead. I would not spend the money if it cost you anything.
If the added features (you call it overhead) from 2000 to 2007 were not incorporated in the program, QB would not exisit.
You illustrate a corporate business model that's common in software.
People rant about Microsoft being a monopoly - but Microsoft has a competitor just as powerful as it is: itself. Yep, monopolies must compete against themselves. If they didn't offer a better product that the previous one, their revenue stream would die.
There are, of course, a few exceptions. The Model T - where Ford had to produce zillions of the same car just to satisfy the initial demand. Another example is government-sanction monopolies such as power distribution.
In general, though, monopolies are good.
