Capitol Gains on sale of spin off stock

I sold a small amount of stock obtained when HPQ spun off Agilent. I have not been able to find out what the tax implications are. Will TurboTax guide me thru this arcane process ? Advice and/or info will be much appreciated.

HPQ didn't spin off A :-) Hewlett-Packard did, and their stock ticker was HWP at the time, only changing to HPQ after the Compaq purchase.

No idea if Turbo Tax will help you in that. For each share of HWP you got 0.3814 shares of A. You then need to distribute the original basis price between the HWP/HPQ and A shares, in 0.7804 and 0.2196 ratios.

You should have gotten a tax form with the transaction. GO to the HP or Aligent site. There should be documents, usually under Investor Relations) describing how to deal with the tax consequences. Basically, it's up to you to figure out your cost basis for the transaction .... with he help of worksheets....
