Categorizing Credit Card Transactions

I download Citibank credit card data into a .qif file, and then load that into an account for the credit card in Quicken 2000 (I know, pretty old).

Each time, I have to go in an categorize all the transactions, even though they're pretty much the same thing every month - Safeway, Exxon, etc., which I always categorize the same way.

It is very tedious to do it manually every month. Is there a way for Quicken to memorize the transaction categories?

Thanks for any replies.

Why do you use a qif file??

I download my Citibank credit card transactions directly into a Quicken credit card account. And many of them are automatically categorized in the process.

Because Q2000's Direct/WebConnect access has been terminated.

It has been far too long since I used Q2000 for me to say whether there is a basic problem, or that perhaps you just don't have things setup properly.

I am fairly sure that Q2000 had QuickFill which is the underlying mechanism Quicken uses to categorize your transactions for you. You "memorize" a transaction, and future transactions for that payee get the same category, and other if they are in the memorized transaction.

I can't guarantee you the details of the process, but I can say how Q2002 deluxe would handle it.

You can right-click on a transaction, then click on "Memorize payee (or transaction). That will place the payee/transaction in the Memorized Transaction List. You can edit it there; maybe you don't want the same amount in all transactions for that payee, or you don't want the same contents of the memo field, etc.).

Then you make sure your Preferences are set to utilize QuickFill. In the same general area where you set register font size, color, etc., there should be a section of options pertaining to QuickFill. Two of those options must be checked: "Complete fields using previous entries" and "Recall memorized payees (or transactions)".

One other thought comes to mind: I don't know whether it could have an effect on QuickFill or not, but even if it doesn't, it is still something to think about. I am almost certain that Q2000 did not provide a "Compare to Register" capability when importing QIF files, and it's possible that not having compare to register could affect QuickFill for imported qif file transactions. Others here still using Q2000 could probably tell you for sure. But if you are contented importing QIF files for your data, Q2002 is a much better version of Quicken overall than Q2000, in my opinion (I used Q2000, Q2001 and Q2002 - all "Deluxe"), and Q2002 will give you Compare To Register for QIF file imports. You can get Q2002 on eBay for a song.
