dividing equities into market sectors

In Q2008 Deluxe securities can be divided into "type" (market index, bond, stock, etc.) or "class" (large cap, small cap, cash etc.). With the present market conditions it would obviously be nice to know which market sector (financial, etc.) the individual equities belong to. How is this done in Quicken? Can it be done?

Thanks.

I think that would be the "Industry/Category" column in Quicken's Portfolio View.

Thank you. I will explore that.

Thanks John. "Industry/Category" or "Sector" is precisely what I needed and was missing -- but it does not seem to exist in my Quicken version unless I am doing something wrong. I am using Quicken 2008 Deluxe desktop and as far as I can see there is "Industry/Category" anywhere. Could it be that one needs a version beyond Deluxe to get that option?

I can't tell you for sure, but I don't think so. My newer versions of Quicken are all Premier or better, but "Industry/Sector" is available in Q2005 Deluxe.

On the Portfolio tab in the Investing Center (for whatever view you choose to modify), click "Options" then "Customize Current View". It's in the "Columns to show".

I don't think you can manually enter it; I believe those classifications are pre-defined ... and downloaded.

From Quicken Help: "All publicly traded companies are categorized into industries using a numerical system based on the nature of the goods or service the company produces. Examples of industries include Aerospace, Computer Software, and Food & Beverage. Similar industries are sometimes grouped together and referred to as sectors such as Technology, Utilities, and Financial Services."

You can probably discover more information using Google; I have never done any checking into the details.

Thanks John. I found it. Now I have to find out (as Al asked) how to get that info into Quicken because the Industry column is now just empty.

I think the column only pertains to stocks, not bonds, mutual funds, etc.

I made a quick visual scan in Q2005 Deluxe, Q2008 Premier and Q2009 RPM and it appears that every one of my stocks has an Industry/Category value.

Mine were all empty, but when I downloaded asset class info and historical prices, it filled the column up.

Hope that did not make the quicken file enormous.

Thanks for the help.
