Downloading account information for the first time...

I just activated my copy of Quicken 2005 for Mac that came with my new machine. I have used Quicken Windows in the past, but not for several years, and I have no Windows file that I want to transfer to the Mac.

I have downloaded chequing and credit card accounts from Royal Bank in Canada, but the balances in the program are wildly incorrect. For example, I have several thousand dollars in my chequing account, but Quicken shows me as having an overdraft of over 14,000.00.

There must be something obvious I am missing. Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Almost no financial institutions will download 100% of your historical transactions. Because you are starting a new Quicken file, you have no history; you probably need to create a "balance forward" or adjustment transaction.

In any event; when your balance is off, the first thing to do is to begin some sort of reconcile process: you need to know whether you have all the transactions from the date of the earliest to the present and if every amount is correct. If you do, what is missing are the older transactions and you will probably have to create a balance forward for their net amount. If other transactions are missing or incorrect, you may need to speak with your fi, or see if you have manually entered transactions in error.
