I noticed the office stores (either Office Max or Staples) had it over the weekend in their flyers.

Boy, with so much of the tax laws still in play at this point, looks like a LOT of maintenance will be added prior to a filing-ready version.

It also started showing up in the office supply ads this weekend at similar quite high prices.

?Hi, Hank.

I got TT 2010 BASIC at Best Buy last week for $29.99 (plus sales tax, of course).

As we discuss here each year at this time, the Basic version (often on a hidden shelf at retail stores) is all that many of us need - especially those of us in Texas and other states that do not have a state income tax. Intuit MUST include in even its bottom-of-the-line package all the tools that we need to file a complete return; they don't dare risk a complaint that my return was wrong just because I didn't pay them more money. The Deluxe package adds a single state income tax product, plus some ADVICE, but not more capability for actually preparing the federal return. Premier adds GUIDANCE for investments but, again, no additional capabilities - except for whatever "Cost Basis Lookup" might provide; Basic handles all the basis questions that I've run into. Home and Business does add some capabilities that can be VERY important for some users, such as creation of W-2 forms for your employees, but most of us don't need those.

As Andrew points out, tax laws for 2010 are far from final, and won't be for a while - at least until the Lame Duck Congress goes home, and maybe even into 2011. But I, for one, appreciate having the preliminary version in November so that I can do year-end tax planning. I may need to sell stocks or make other transactions before 1/1/11. Intuit provides frequent automatic updates well into "tax season", so if we are diligent, we can be confident that the program will be complete and up to date when we actually file our return - probably in March or on April 15 (on a Friday in 2011).

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm wondering when we'll begin seeing it bundled with Quicken, in the past that's usually been the best bargain.

Hmmmm, Staples is showing Quicken Deluxe for $34.99 if bought with any version of TurboTax but that's no deal, Frys.com shows Quicken Deluxe for $29.95 after $20.00 rebate and TurboTax Basic for $29.95, same as Staples.

Wonder if prices will drop?

Since I can't do anything about my taxes 'til all the 1099s show up, I've got a long time to think about it :-)

Don't wait too long, I've found that the best prices only last a month or so.

You can always enter everything and add the 1099s as they show up, that's what I do with 1099s and K1s.

How's about the W-2s? Doesn't anyone work anymore? :-)

Well, the W-2s come pretty quick, but the 1099s (and corrected 1099s) tend to dribble in up to the last minute.

?Hi, again, Hank.

Office Depot's ad in the Sunday (11/28/10) paper says TTax 2010 Deluxe is $49.99. Includes federal e-file - and Quicken Starter Edition.

I used to rush out, but I've found that the prices get better, the longer I wait. Costco will probably have a coupon some time in January.
