Paid a handyman: how show expense?

How would I enter what I paid a handyman to do some work? I didn't take out any taxes, he's not an employee, and I don't want to make him an employee with taxes and all that stuff.

I think you haven't provided enough information to get a good answer. It depends on what you paid the person to do, for what purpose, and the context. For example, if you paid someone to do some ordinary maintenance work on your own home, you might use a home repair category. If you paid someone to add a deck onto your house, you might categorize the payment as a transfer to an asset account for your home to add to its cost basis. If you paid someone to do some work on your rental property or other business, you might categorize it as an appropriate business expense. There are various possibilities, until you provide more information, IMO. .............................. Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once
