What is the best way to record a stock name change only. Place holder there for -xxx shares (old name)and one for +xxx shares(new name)

If you use the name change function then Q will change ALL references to the stock going back into ALL of its data files.
Therefore, you can look up and see old data ONLY by the ticker symbol but not by name. That is what Q uses anyway.
If you prefer to match reality so that the old name is shown "back in time" for reports and such than do a shares removed/added combination using the same number of shares and cost basis.
