Qualified Dividends

Does Quicken2006 support tracking qualified dividends? There is a _DivIncQual item in the category list but no way to get to it through investment transactions. Also, TaxPlanner (a sorry piece of software!!) doesn't seem to know about it.

Yes & No - now that's a lot of help!!

I do it in QW06 Dlx using a custom category that I created [don't see the '_DivIncQual' category you refer to]. There is a Tax Line Assignment for Schedule B: Qualified dividends and I assign that to the custom category.

In order to use this category, record the income as 'Miscellaneous' in the Income Transaction window. This will activate the 'Category for Miscellaneous' drop-down list and you can select the category at this point.

QW's Tax Schedule Report will now provide separate subtotals for '_DivInc' [Ordinary] and 'DivIncQual'.

This method of handling does not appear to 'interface' with TTax if you attempt to import to TTax. I do not import to TTax, but do use the Tax Schedule Report for manual entry.

I have also experimented with using classes for ordinary and qualified dividends - again enter as Miscellaneous and assign category _DivInc/Ord or _DivInc/Qual. This worked but for reasons I've forgotten, I have reverted to the alternate above.

Have not found Tax Planner particularly useful either - qualified dividends being one of the problems and handling of SocSec [taxable portion] income another. Tax Planner is far too conservative for my purposes. I find using last years TTax gives very realistic estimates.
