Quicken 2002 Data File Woes

Thanks in advance for any help and or suggestions.

I have Quicken 2002 and it's been running flawlessly on XP Pro ( SP 2 ) for the last 2 - 3 years. A couple of weeks ago I tried to open one of my 2 data files and received a message saying Quicken couldn't open it. I restored from Backup , and a couple of days later, it happened again. This pattern repeated a couple of times, so I decided to uninstall / re install.

When I tried the reinstall I received a message referring to 16bit apps (I believe ) and Google found a fix - restoring autoexec.nt ( which SP 2 can apparently knock out ) to the System Folder. Fine....installation went OK. Restored backups and all seemed fine. Now, it's happening again. (i.e. Quicken is unable to open my files , however restoring seems to work OK)

I don't believe that it's hardware related as everything else seems OK and while I have various spyware / antivirus scanners , they are NOT set to 'auto cleanup' anything without my approval so I'm at a loss as to what is causing my troubles.

Many Thanks!

You are in an area where I have virtually no expertise. But, while researching a problem somewhat similar to yours, I discovered a different Google search result (from this newsgroup) saying that the Q2002 "installer" is a 16 bit application and that it requires a file named "ntvdm.exe"; the "fix" was to get a working version of that file ... from Microsoft (your Windows CD?) or your pc manufacturer. I did not find a follow up that verified that the aforementioned file was in fact the culprit.

Hi John, thanks for your reply. Yes , I found a similar reference to the reinstallation problem and the autoexec.nt I copied from Windows/Repair seemed to do the trick and allow a re install. It didn't seem to address the original problem of what prevented access to the file

I've searched my system for ntvdm.exe and have 2 copies. One in Windows/System32 and another in Windows/Servicepackfiles/i386. I compared the file details and they appear to be identical. I'm a little reluctant to overwrite system files, so I might try a little more research and then perhaps an uninstall followed by a search and remove for all associated Quicken files and registry entries / followed by a second re install. The sporadic appearance of the problem makes me think that some sort of path or file reference is to blame, rather than a system file. One would assume that a bad system file would effect other programs or wouldn't allow it to open at all ?

Much appreciated.
