Suggestion for Improvement

I have a suggestion for what I think might be a major improvement--a new feature--in Quicken. Can someone point me to where I might make such a suggestion--e-mail address, web site, etc.?

Or if all such suggestions are ignored, just tell me that, and I won't bother making the effort.

I don't have an address to send a suggestion to, but would be interested in what yours is.

If you check it out, you'll likely find a lot of jerks posting there.

But it is the "official" site for suggestions for Intuit to make changes. And Intuit says that they do pay some attention to suggestions that garner support (votes) there.

what yours is.

I would like to have the ability to set up an "account" that wasn't a real account, but a compendium of all the spending, savings, and credit accounts, and I'd like to be able to have it sorted by date. Since it would be a duplicate of other accounts, it shouldn't be added into any totals, and we shouldn't be able to post any new entries to it. Its only purpose would be to search for transactions.

Why do I want this? More than once I've wanted to find a transaction (for example, something that I bought) that I made some time ago, when I don't remember exactly when, nor how I paid for it (check? cash? credit card? which credit card?). There are various ways I can do it now (searching multiple accounts, spending reports), but they are all clumsy and slow. The fake "account" that I'd like to have would make this much easier and faster.

But if you, or anyone else here, know of an easy way that already exists to do what I would like, I'm all ears.

The Quicken Find function does what you ask. At least it does so in the Quicken 2010 that I am using. With any account register displayed, just click Find, fill in the search criteria, and go. It searches all transactions in all accounts. You only have to do it once, unless you need to alter the search parameters to refine the result.

Hi, Dick.

Yep. Quicken 2013 Deluxe works the same way.

Also, Ken, since you mentioned "for example, something that I bought", my accountant mindset kicked in. I use a few Asset accounts for things such as furniture and tools (bigger than a screwdriver). These accounts collect entries from my checking account, credit cards and any other forms of payment, so that's the only place I need to look. The downside is that I usually forget to "retire" the asset when it gets junked or given away, so I still think I own disk drives and VCRs that I haven't seen in a decade or more. But I can tell you when and where I bought each one and how much I paid for it.

What? R.C., you mean you aren't depreciating your screwdrivers and hammers? ROTFL! I have to admit that I do understand your thinking! I just do n't carry it to that degree. I call hard assets like this Household Equipm ent, as opposed to Household Supplies. My sister and friends think I'm nut s, of course.

Ok, I give up. Why do my reply posts seem to scramble the posts I'm trying to reply to? I'm not consciously trying to make things unreadable.

Despite what I say in the next sentence, thank you very much!

No it doesn't; it searches only in the current account (in Quicken

2013 which I'm using now, and in all the older versions I can remember). But thanks to your reply, I tried Find *All* rather than just Find. I hadn't used Find All very often in the past, because I had always assumed that rather than finding the most recent matching transaction in the current account, it found all the transactions in the current account. But now, thanks to you, looking more closely, I see that, much to my surprise, Find All searches all accounts.

I still wouldn't mind seeing the improvement I had in mind implemented, because now and then I might want to do something like see all the purchases I made in June 2005. But I feel much less strongly about it, and wouldn't bother making it as a suggestion.

Thanks again.

Yes, the same way, but not the way he described. See the reply I just sent to his message.

Interesting, RC, thanks. But I wasn't thinking of assets in particular, and despite my using the word "bought," I also mean things like services. For example, I had a tree trimmed a couple of years ago, and I probably need to do it again soon. But I couldn't remember who did the trimming nor how I paid him. So I just did a Find All on tree trim, which told me who did it, which is what I need to know, so I can contact him again.

Thanks very much. I'm much less interested in making this suggestion now (see the other reply I just made in this thread), but I'll file that away for the future.

reply to? I'm not consciously trying to make things unreadable.

According to your headers, you are using a newsreader called G2/1.0. I've never heard of it, but clearly that's what's doing the scrambling Either find out how to configure it so the scrambling doesn't occur, or switch newsreaders.

Quicken 2013 has this capability. On the left side account bar, the very top entry states "All Accounts". If you select that, you can specify a custom account and pick the real accounts you wish to combine.

Yes, I did mean "Find All" but I didn't state it correctly. In Quicken 2010, the dialog box that comes up when I select "Find" from the menu or the tool bar is labeled "Quicken Find". That was what I was referring to. But within that dialog there is a "Find" button and a "Find All" button.

I always automatically use "Find All" because I rarely know what account the target may be in. And sometimes I want to see a list of like charges that are spread across more than one account. I had completely forgotten that there was even a choice to limit the search to the current account.

That's what I suspected.

Understood.

Yep! But I figured it out, and thanks again.

"All transactions," not "All Accounts" ("All Accounts" is a choice on the result of selecting "All Transactions"; but for me, "Custom" is a better choice; I don't want investment accounts, etc.)

But yes, it's there; I just never noticed it before. And it's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks very much.

In the newer versions of Quicken for Windows, there is an "All Accounts" pseudo-register. It is basically what I think you're looking for.

Look at the top of the Account Bar for "All Transactions".

[You can add/change/delete transactions there.]

Yes, thanks. I found it yesterday after Robert Neville suggested the same thing.

So that's only in newer versions? That must be why I had never noticed it. I've been using Quicken since sometime around 1990.

First appeared in Q2011.

[Sorry for my repetitive post. I did a Send/Receive, saw only one or two new posts (one of them your explanation of what you wanted) .... Robert Neville's was not among them. So I composed my answer, and Sent it. That send cause a dozen unread posts - with dates/times well prior to mine - to appear. Don't know where they had been hiding.]

Apology not necessary--no problem. You even added something informative--that it was only in recent versions.
