Turbo Tax- old returns

I just tried to open last year's return with TT'06. No go. Only option is to transfer- but that only brings over taxpayer data. Is there no way to open old returns? I'll delete them if that's the case.

BTW, I do have paper copies.

You have to install the version with which you created the return. That is, to open your 2005 return, you need to have TT2005 installed. That's why I make paper copies and PDFs too. :-)

There really isn't a lot of point in maintaining the TTax software and electronic data file once you've filed and imported to the next year. The only time where it might be useful is if you discovered an error and needed to file an amended return. Updating your old return and saving it under a new name would avoid some manual recalculating.

Thanks, sounds like I should be saving as PDF in addition to saving the paper, as you do.

If your system is not particularly space-challenged, you could also do nothing... Just install each new year in a new folder leaving prior years installed in place. All things considered it doesn't cost anything. I have my tax software (TaxCut) installed for each year since 1995 (plus various data backups). That way I can lookup whatever's faster to get to.

What I do, in addition, is to save the CD that I used to install and then download the last update from Intuit and save that on a CD along with the returns. This way, I can, if I want, open the return and update it.
