TurboTax 2015 (tax year 2014) UPSELL

Holy bean counting!

Just looked into Intuit website to search for TT 2015 (for tax year 2014). I have used Deluxe "forever" & Deluxe Fed-noState for 10 years or so.

SO?

Now I find out (or think I have) that investment stuff (Schedule D) - and other stuff too - are not in Deluxe, but require purchasing Premier...

... at a hefty increase from traditional Deluxe. Yikes! Oy! Ay-ay-ay!

Please tell me I'm wrong. Please?

WOW! Now you found premier at 74.99. When I looked a couple of days ago it was 84.99 as special.

If enough people tell them they will NOT purcxhase Premiere version, but will swithc to anothe tax program, maybe they will reconsider.

I have used TT since the 1980's as it existed back then by Chip Soft, but I have been looking for an excuse to try some other program.

Hi, Al.

I've been using TurboTax BASIC for several years now and have never had problems reporting my investment transactions with it.

We can use Basic in Texas since it is one of the few states that do NOT have a STATE income tax.

Intuit's website doesn't show TT Basic - at least, not prominently. (I haven't found it yet, but I haven't looked very hard.) And in the stores (Office Depot, Best Buy, etc.), it often is not displayed on the shelf - but they probably will go into the back room and get it for you if you ask. One reason they might not display it on the shelf or on the website is that many buyers might opt for it to save money - and then complain when they realize that they need the State return.

Remember, Intuit MUST include all that we need to file a complete return, even in the bottom-level product. They can add "bells and whistles" to their higher-priced products, but if an essential element is missing from Basic, Intuit would be faced with lots of complaints and maybe some lawsuits.

I've not yet seen TurboTax for 2014 returns, but my guess is that the product lineup has not changed that much from recent years.

Remember that I've been retired for over 20 years, so be sure to check with your own CPA for current rules.

Why "must" they do that?

And if they don't support Sch D in the basic version (never mind Deluxe), how do you say "I've been using TurboTax BASIC for several years now and have never had problems reporting my investment transactions with it. " R.C ?

How do you generate the Sch D stuff if the program version doesn't support it? Or do they indeed support in, but only in the FORMS view (thus, you have to manually type all the info in as appropriate, and it basically just does the math and totals), and not in the interview section?

good points....

I'd like to find out ....

- if this "feature matrix" is for the "online" version vs the "desktop" version.

- it it's just the "interview" support vs having the fill in the forms avail,

- also, interview vs forms vs "import" from other sources..like brokerage.

RC, would like your input on issues raised after you posted, as you are still using product while retired.

If I have to fill out every form myself and, therefore, move data from one form to another as THAT one is being filled out, I might as well use paper, no?

The Intuit chart driving the user to the "correct" version does not have checks for investment stuff below the Premier level.

Hi, Andrew.

Of course they "support" Schedule D - and all the other forms that are required.

Using TT Basic, I Import data from last year's TurboTax, from Quicken - and from a few banks and brokers - although I'm not terribly impressed with the efficiency of this since I have to go back and edit them carefully afterwards. It's not just a push-one-button operation. As my CPA partner used to say, we have to "massage" the data inputs.

Maybe it's just because today's return process is so easy compared to what I went through in my 30 years of active tax practice. And I'm sure that it's easier for me since I still remember SOME of the ways that we've always had to build the return from forms, schedules and other "building bricks". But, for the most part, it's just a matter of making sure that all the information on the return is correct, whether it is data that I've typed in directly or imported. It's still MY return and MY responsibility to get it right. I pay Intuit for only as much help as I need.

Of course, it also helps that my return is much simpler now because my ec>

Hi, Bart.

Well, they can't sell a package that can't produce a completed return. They can make US do more of the work, but the return must be ready to file when we finish - and all the essential pieces have to be there, whether Intuit reminds us or not. It is still OUR return and OUR responsibility to get it right, not Intuit's.

The IRS would not take kindly to me if I protested that my return was incomplete because I could not afford to buy the high-priced program.

And see my reply to Andrew.

Thanks as always R.C.!

I am guessing that the difference in supporting Sch D is the interview process where in plain English and forms one gets to put in all the stuff, but if there are any 'flags', logic in the program kicks in ... like perhaps realizing dates might catch you in a wash-sale that perhaps one wouldn't catch if one was just filling in the forms.

The reason I (and others, I presume) are curious as to your comment is that in the product feature chart on their website at:

Well, I probably will still (unfortunately) go with PREMIER just because it might be easier for me to assure myself I got it right in the logic is looking over my shoulder on some of this stuff that perhaps I do not get in the BASIC version, even if indeed it contains (As you state but I can't verify independently) Sch D is some included.

All I can add is I have always used the "deluxe" version, but that's becuase I have to do 3 state returns and it's cheaper to use "deluxe" for one of the states. I have no idea what the "higher" versions provide. I have to do A,B,C,D, and E and the various supporting forms including the world's worst, 1116. I never have a problem with how "deluxe" handles these. My biggest problem is that how I have Quicken setup doesn't allow for no-work import directly into TTax, but it's close enough.

For me the most important feature of TTax is tracking depreciation and "deluxe" does that. It also does a lot of tracking of retirement accounts, but I haven't taken any distributions yet so time will tell how good a job it does.

I've also used DLX for all my TTax years, and have the usual A,B, plus the C,D,E, and K-1

and I can "import" from outside sources - the brokerage accts - and all is well.

Can't recall how the previous versions were listed in the "feature matrix" on the boxes... Guess we'll find out when someone gets the TTax 2014.

WOW -----------

I just went and opened my TTax 2013 - and it was the BASIC VERSION !!

Guess I have been using the BASIC VERSION for several years.... I was confused.....

My Quicken 2012 is the DLX version.

I just went and opened my TTax 2013 - and it was the BASIC VERSION !! In fact - ALL my recent TTax software is BASIC VERSION

Guess I have been using the BASIC VERSION for several years.... I was confused..... My Quicken 2012 is the DLX version.

And - as mentioned... I have always used the Forms - A, B, C, D, E, K-1 along with 1099-div, int, q, misc, and the IRA forms & worksheets. Also have IMPORTED from various banks, brokerages, etc

SO - I'm guessing the other versions merely have added "walk-thurs" to guide folks in filling out the forms..... AMAZING...

VERY HAPPY to hear about BASIC version. Is there an escape clause for us we ak-kneed folk who go may ahead and buy BASIC, but think of scampering to an "upgrade"? IF SO, any idea of cost to upgrade BASIC to higher versions - o ther than scuttling BASIC and coughing up the retail price of the 2nd purch ase?

Thanks.

I went looking on the TT Community - Here is an old message, some of the wording changed, but just checked on my TT 2013 - and the "UPGRADE" dialog is there....
