Turbotax: Don't cry for me

Lest we get too concerned for the future of Intuit, it may be helpful to review my situation this year:

Turbotax Fed and State $45

Note - this gets you up to 5 federal efiles, but not the state efile. Since we have income in two states and were doing parents taxes from a 3rd state

Additional States @ $40 each $80 Three State efiles: $75

Total: $200

Note that the additional state and efile charges go 100% to Intuit - unlike the basic package that gets shared with the vendor.

In past years, I've filed the states manually. One state has you enter numbers from the federal return on a web page, the other allowed paper filing. This year, the state that had allowed paper filing said electronic only, so i thought I'd let Intuit do it all. Going to have to revisit that next year.

My state, TN, allows filing via their website. SO, I have TTAX prepare a TN return, and then key the info into the state's site.

And MY state (NY) is unique. They do not allow vendors to profit on sale of State modules in Turbo Tax. New York is specifically (and the only one) called out on Turbo Tax packaging as a footnote.

So for once, we Noo Yawrkers win!

They FORCE you to do it, but still don't let you do it for "free?"

No - they refer you to the federal free file site, which basically says if you exceed a certain gross income or have certain types of income, you aren't eligible for free filing.

My TN state tax is on my Dividends ONLY, no tax on earned income or Cap Gains. And, there's an exemption for the first $1,250 of Divs/etc. SO, let's compare your "no profit on TTAX" (but paying NYS taxes), against my "almost no state taxes".

Still think that you win?

Nope, you beat me. But given every else that happens here in NY, I'm still a happy camper.

I've spent a WHOLE LOT of time in NYC. Former NGO rep to the UN, and former banking systems consultant for IBM.

Given that almost every "It City" list is now listing Nashville as #1 ... I'll stay here.

BTW, I do recognize the difference between NYC & NYS. I also spent, for IBM, 2 weeks in Endicott ... where the best restaurant for MANY driving miles was Olive Garden. I've got better restaurants than that within walking distance of my house.
