IRS not processing paper returns

The IRS is not processing paper tax returns and advises taxpayers to use electronic filing.

I mailed in my tax returns on or about March 2. I already got my refund check from the state of California. But the IRS web pile does not even register the existence of my return. The above web page reveals why.

I will be using Turbo Tax to file electronically for the first time. I don't like it, but the alternative (wait for unknown amount of time) is worse.

I've been filing electronically for many years now and find that it works as well as a paper return. Better in the sense that there are no transcription errors and faster as that data entry workflow is avoided.

That said, even though I've used Turbotax for the past few years, I'm not a big fan of their business model. They make it very difficult to find FreeFile and are keen to charge significant amounts for both the state return, as well as state filing. Even if you buy a Fed/State combo package, you still pay additional for state efile.

BTW: Please note the comment on the IRS web page you cited: "If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return"

Ah, that's because your state hasn't put the screws onto them! One (the only one? :-) ) thing that is nice about living in NY and dealing with state taxes is that Intuit, by law, can not charge extra for state efiling. I believe we're the only state that have that caveat.
