upgrade recommend ?

Good comment, John. I have used several versions of Quicken for many years and have been extremely satisfied with it. However, I recently parallel tested Money with duplicate transactions for 3 months and again for 6 months. Both times I dropped Money in favor of Quicken due to some notable basic differences in my opinion, including faster reconciling of accounts and more flexible reports. So I guess it is just a matter of what you are looking for in a personal finance program.

Good choice! I run Quicken 2004 Basic and have been very satisified with the program. I have read many complaints regarding Q2005 on this newsgroup. Perhaps Q2006 will be an improvement over Q2005.

Frankly, I never get involved in recommending versions of Quicken.

But I can tell you that I tested Q2004 and Q2005 extensively over the past several months: and I found not one reason to think that Q2004 was better than Q2005 ... unless you have a significant interest in importing QIF files to investment accounts. And I have read every post in this group over that period of time; none of which altered my opinion.

A major problem with every new "version" of Quicken is that Intuit changes the way you're supposed to do things. Everything is (of course) an "enhancement" or a new feature. However, people are creatures of habit. Therefore many of us balk, grumble and cuss when forced to do things differently from the way we're used to.

I think the only objective way to judge whether a version of Quicken is "better" than another is to find out how fast and how often Intuit issues updates. In that, I believe that Q05 was better then 04 because there were fewer updates. But I'm going by memory, I never used either 03 or 04. Now I'm (moderately) happy with 05. I think it handles nicer than my old 02, although Intuit should have left the QIF alone. Partially removing that was a major setback. I now (luckily only a few times) had to generate a new crazy account, just to import a qif file, then move the transactions to an existing one, and delete the crazy account.

I bought Q2005D about 4 months ago to get the rebate. I am running Q2004D while Q2005 matures in the box.

I probably have not followed the complaints closely enough, but I had the impression that more of the complaints were from people running on older releases of Windows.

Have you made the switch to Q2005 or are you still also running Q2004?

Yes, I made the switch to Q2005 (R2, by the way) on April 20. So far things have gone without a hitch, though I did quite a bit of preparation before cutting over.

How come your copy hasn't been updated to R3?

I chose not to. Some of the problems I read about with Q2005 seemed to trouble R3 users more than others. I did a lot of testing using R2 and did not have any problems that I could tie to R2, so I have just left it that way. (The list of "fixes" in R3 did not seem to have much impact for me, but I will be keeping my eye open for related problems.)

Intuit has written several releases of Q2005 bug fixes, I have completed my taxes, and John Pollard has tested Q2005 out pretty thoroughly and feels confident enough to make the switch all while my Q2005D sat in the box (plus I got the December rebate).

I believe it is about ready now for prime time.
