1040EZ Problem (believe it or not)

Apr 17, 2009 1 Replies

I feel like an idiot. Sent my 1040EZ in on time and with the correct payment, but inadvertantly ticked the "You" box of line 5 (I'm single and nobody can claim me as a dependant, the lucky devils).

What is the best method to correct this error/inform the IRS of the error. I have an installment agreement with the IRS for last years taxes and don't want to have that agreement voided because I made a stupid mistake.

Thank you for any suggestions !

Box 5 is

If someone can claim you (or your spouse if a joint return) as a dependent, check the applicable box(es) below and enter the amount from the worksheet on back.

If you checked You and entered 8950, but should have not checked anything and still entered 8950, then I think all you need is an amended return with no boxes checked. I'd probably send an amended return now, but you can wait till the IRS asks you questions and send the amended return then. Let's see what other say.
