403b and an IRA?

My son is finally getting benefits. His employer will put $2800 in a 403b; maybe it is a match, but he thinks they just put it in regardless. I expect his total income will be about $60,000.

I have googled my questions but get a variety of answers that can't all be right.

1) How much can he put in the 403b?

2) At what income is his ability to put money into his existing Roth IRA restricted?

The 403(b) has the same limitations as a 401(k). The maximum elective deferral in 2018 is $18,500. If the employee is at least age 50, the maximum is $24,500.

A single person can make a 2018 contribution to a Roth IRA (assuming there is adequate earned income) until MAGI reaches $135,000. The ability to contribute starts to phase-out at $120,000. You can find the definition of MAGI and a worksheet to compute it on page 42 of IRS Pub
