Can I choose to be a US resident for tax purpose

Mar 30, 2005 0 Replies

I am an F-1 student from China. I have been advised to choose to be an alien for the tax purpose. By that way my first $5000 income is exempted from the US tax. My question is whether I can choose to be a US resident? This is the fourth year I am in the US. I will have to be a US resident from the next year for the tax purpose anyway. What's the other consequencies on my future such as my application for a green card if the answer is yes and I choose so? Thanks, Kevin
