Charitable effort

My wife, a nurse, volunteered to spend a week in Haiti, assisting the worlds Most needy. She paid for all of her expenses, ala flight lodging, meals etc.

We take the Standard deduction on our CT and IRS returns. Is there anyway we might recover part of her charitable expenses, on our tax returns?

Not without itemizing.

The standard deduction, on Federal income tax, is in lieu of any itemized deductions you might be entitled to, and I presume it's the same for Connecticut tax.

I'm assuming that the value of your wife's airfare, lodging, etc., is not enough to make it worth your while to itemize deductions. (She can't deduct the value of her time, regardless.)

So your only hope is in the "adjustments" section, at the bottom of page 1 of your Form 1040. I don't hold out much hope there, but read that section of the Form 1040 instructions, just to be sure.
