Right,

My wife earns 17,500 a year. She gets on avarage a month 1,143 after Tax and N.I. Which means she is paying 3,781 a year on Tax and N.I.

Is she paying to much Tax and N.I?

No, it's spot on. Income tax is 2432 and NI 1353 (rounded up). So net pay is 13714 pa or 1142 pm (rounded down). Check with online calculator like

It assumes she isn't entitled to any other deductions, such as working expenses.

Thanks for that. No, she isn't entitled to any other deductions.

We're all paying too much tax and NI. It's time we stopped and told the politicians to fund their madcap schemes by passing a hat.

How can she be paying too much tax if she still is left with some of her earnings?

I'm sure Brown will take more soon. He just has to find something to waste money on.
