Filing 1040X for client - want to change "overpayment" on Line 17

Hello - I'm filing a 1040x for client to clean up a mess on his 2005 return. His tax owed will go up by $500. On the 1040x, it wont let you change the "overpayment" on line 17, which he had as a $900 refund on his original

1040. This will obviously result in him owing the $500 because of the newly figured tax.

However, Line 17 says "as adjusted by the IRS". This client filed the 2005

1040 more than 3 years late, hence his refund claim for $900 was rejected by the IRS. I assume this would count as an "adjustment by the IRS" down to 0 on Line 17, since the $900 refund was never "used".

Can I do this? If so, he won't owe anything on the 2005 1040x. Thanks

You not only can, you must . The overpayment, as adjusted by IRS, was zero.

I presume there are changes in this amended return that will affect subsequent years. Otherwise I see no point in filing such an amendment.

Katie - Hmmmm. Great point. The changes via the 2005 1040x will *not* affect susequent years in any way, shape or form. So your answer makes sense - no change in tax due, so don't file the 1040x. I may do it though, just to stick to the letter of the law.

My confusion was based on the technical language of the 1040x instructions. It says "If your original return was change by the IRS and the result was an

*additional overpayment* of tax, also include that amount on Line 17". I got stuck on the literal language, but just needed to hear it from someone else that an adjustment *down* by the IRS can change Line 17 as well.

Thank you for your help and any further thoughts you may have!
