as opposed to mediocre or even bad experiences which people like to write about. Therefore, this is a complimment.
In a nutshell, client had a cp2000 last March regarding stock basis and since I had just prepared the 1040x for 2007 taking care of this, client answered with a letter and the 1040x to Chamblee "service center (!)" and a check for $177.
Two weeks ago the 90 day letter arrived, so something had to be done. Finally today I reach IRS by phone not at Chamblee but at Fresno. After outlining the problem, the assistor had the file on his screen and saw the 1040x had never been processed or even recorded as received. However I already had an eServices transcript showing the $177 check as overpayment, since no added tax had been assessed.
Easy solution. If I would fax the 1040x plus schedule d to him while he held on the phone, we could take care of it. Ahem! Told him I have no separate fax phone number, just never got around to buying an extra phone line JUST for a fax. And of course we knew that if I hung up the phone to send the fax, I would never get him again on the phone probably.
So here's the amazing part. He had me read off the figures he needed for stock basis and unreported capital gains dividends, and then he calculated an extra 172$ in tax, said the other $5 could be interest and case was closed! I agreed to that of course.
Isn't that amazing? No extra documents had to be faxed or mailed. Just our verbal figures did the trick.
