Gift Loyalty Good or Bad?

Just wondering what people who use Gift Loyalty Add-On's think of them? Can't you do generally the same thing with just RMS? For example, issue customer cards via barcode, run a report for customers who spent over $100 for example, and issue a credit to them for say $5.00? Of course the amounts are examples...but what good is a loyalty program, please anyone explain?
