Inherited Stocks

I inherited 50 stocks oh TESLA My question is when I sell the stock how is capital gains calculated on:


- On original price Or



-On the I inherited price


Your gains basis would be the value as of the date of death of the person you inherited it from.

Exactly right - unless the stock came from an IRA, 401-K or other kind of qualified plan. In that case tax is on the full sale price.

With the possibility of a credit due to estate taxes paid, right? I forget how that works, but I keep it tucked in the back of my head.
