IRS audit

My client is in CA, I am in PA. In April, 2004, we received a request for an audit of TY 2004, in CA. I immediately requested a transfer (via faxed letter) to the Phila Service Center. To date, we have received no reply, nor any further correspondence from the IRS. Do I have anything to worry about? Should I try to contact the IRS to find out where this stands?

HELP!

Moderator: I am ignorant of this matters, but why didn't you send the request to the Center requesting the audit?

Generally audits are conducted where the taxpayer resides. You should follow up, as any adjustments could result in your client incurring additional interest and maybe additional penalties (that could be avoided). Most likely, there was some problem with your POA and/or the IRS sent correspondence to the client or the client's old address. In either case you may find that you missed the audit and that the IRS made adjustments without your knowing. As you are probably aware, the Taxpayer Advocate Office is pretty good at findingn lost cases.... Best of luck,

in April of 2004, TY 2004 would not have even been over never mind a tax return due??

I erred in stating April, 2004. We received the audit notice for TY 2004 in April, 2006! Also, as another poster questioned, we DID send the request to the center requesting the audit. Based on the above additional info, any further assistance?

As another poster suggested, you should follow up to determine the status and location of the case. A visit to your local IRS office with copies of prior correspondence and proof of POA would probably be more effective than letters and phone calls. If the customer service people at the counter can't help, ask to speak to a manager who can. Computer records (AMDIS) will show if the case is open or closed, where it is controlled, and the ID of the responsible employee if assigned to the field.
