IRS Estimated Tax penalty

Got a letter (4 actually) from Memphis IRS assessing interest and penalty for underpaying 2007 estimates. The thing is, I sent in a

2210 with my return, but the letter makes no reference to it. I looked at the interest they figured, and it appears to be based on using the "regular method" to figure estimates. On my 2210 I checked the "annualized income method" box and completed the appropriate AI section. So I wrote a cover letter explaining and included a copy of my 2210 and sent to the reply address on the notice. But I'm wondering if I should do something more pro- active?

It could be you didn't fill in the penalty section. Otherwise, they probably overlooked it (although you'd think that would be pretty hard to do). What you did is correct but check to make sure all pages of the form are completed.

Thanks. I probably would have liked it better if they had said they hadn't received my 2210, or said they did and didn't like it so I would have an idea of what the problem is.

your 2210 AI, even though it is 4 pages long, so just check to make sure it is complete and send again as you have done.
