IRS return handling

Mailed to the proper address in mid April an amended return (1040-X, which apparently can't be electronically filed), and when checking return status online reply is there is no return.

I have read the notice that comes up every time one checks into irs.gov, as to the severe delays (i.e., 16 weeks) to process paper returns, but I thought that meant PROCESSING data therein, not entering the return id into their files.

Should I re-mail a copy or wait until mid August to check status and act accordingly? The phone they urge one to call for further information is overwhelmed and a recording so notes.

Thank you.

If I had a nickel for every time I suggested a taxpayer should submit a freshly signed copy marked "possible duplicate" ...

That said, the original will likely show up. I can envision stacks and stacks of untouched returns.

Do not send another copy of the return. If you go to

you'll see that it normally takes three weeks for the return to enter the system and up to 16 for processing. However, if you look to the bottom of the page, it was last updated in January, before the COVID crisis.

As of mid-June the IRS claimed to have over 11 million pieces of unopened mail and they typically receive 1 million more each week. Not all of the campuses are open yet, and probably none of them are operating at full capacity due to safety modifications to protect the health of the employees.

Best guess estimates based on the 35-day government shutdown in 2017 are that it will take months to catch up.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do except check the "where's my amended return" page once a week.

Remain hopeful.

I mailed my return March 7 and the refund showed up July 16.

Original returns are slowly being processed, but the OP asked about an amended return. Once an original paper return is received, the data is keyed into the IRS computers and the machines take over. An amended return is reviewed by a human being before the refund is authorized. The "good" news may be that the 16 week estimated processing period has begun.
