How long for a refund on an amended 2007 return?

Nov 15, 2009 3 Replies

On 10/27/09 I filed an amended 2007 1040 and am due about $3,000 back. Any idea how long it takes?

I filed my 2008 1040 on 10/13/09 and found a website that says the refund check was mailed on 11/13. Is there anything comparable for the amended return?

Thanks.

The IRS is currently taking 12 to 16 weeks to process amended returns. That's from when they receive it, not from when you mailed it. So it could be around Feb. 19, 2010 before you get your refund.

There is no way to check the status of an amended return online. If you haven't heard anything by Feb. 19, you could call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to inquire about the status.

I've found they're running longer than that right now. Amended returns from late April - early May were just received by the client. So I would say 5 -

6 months maybe. It certainly would depend on the item(s) being amended.

I have several clients with amended return in the pipeline right now. When I last spoke with the IRS on this - before Christmas - I was told that they are taking AT LEAST 16 WEEKS to process amended returns right now and the wait can be longer. The person I spoke with in Holtsville, NY said they won't even check the status of an amended return unless its been in the system at least 16 weeks.
